Over the last decade, tabletop RPGs (TTRPGs) have had a massive resurgence, transforming the social lives of millions. Thanks in part to pop culture hits like Stranger Things, games like Dungeons & Dragons have reclaimed their spot at the center of the gaming world. But it's not just D&D—titles like Alien RPG, Blade Runner RPG, and Delta Green have carved out their own passionate fanbases.
Personally, I've adventured through many different TTRPG systems, from high-fantasy epics to sci-fi horror. I’ve even dabbled in painting Warhammer miniatures—though, admittedly, I haven’t played yet!
TTRPGs as a Storytelling Supercharger
One of the most incredible aspects of TTRPGs is their ability to foster collaborative storytelling. Whenever I need a creative boost while writing my next comic script, diving into a game helps me think outside the box. The unpredictable nature of tabletop roleplaying challenges players to craft innovative solutions to crises, making it an excellent way to strengthen storytelling muscles.
Beyond writing, I love playing TTRPGs with my kids. These games help them develop essential problem-solving, math, and reading skills. They can also provide a unique way to explore personal challenges. If your child is facing an issue in real life, weaving a similar scenario into a game can help them work through it in a safe, fictional space. That said, I wouldn’t recommend tackling bullying with Alien RPG—probably not the best fit!
FALLEN: The TTRPG – Bringing Mythological Noir to the Tabletop
For years, I’ve been developing a FALLEN tabletop RPG to bring the gritty, neon-drenched noir world of my comic to life. When FALLEN was picked up by Red 5 Comics, I put the project on hold. But after some discussions with the publisher, they gave me the green light to move forward—though they’re not getting into the TTRPG business themselves.
What to Expect from FALLEN: The TTRPG
Set in the dark underworld of FALLEN, this game immerses players in a world of crime, mythology, and supernatural intrigue. Players take on the roles of Wards, mortals who serve powerful gods while navigating the dangerous factions that rule the city. You'll customize your character’s background, patron deity, and skills, shaping a unique experience every session.
The game runs on the Year Zero Engine (YZE), the system behind Alien RPG, Blade Runner RPG, and Mutant: Year Zero. YZE is rules-light, focusing on fluid gameplay and narrative-driven storytelling rather than getting bogged down in complex mechanics. Features like Stress mechanics add tension and stakes, making it an excellent fit for the noir crime-mystery feel of FALLEN.
When Can You Play FALLEN: The TTRPG?
Soon! The core rulebook and the first scenario are in their early draft stages, and playtesting is set to begin. Once I gather feedback, refine the mechanics, and run more tests, FALLEN: The TTRPG will make its way to Kickstarter.
I also have other TTRPG projects in the works using both YZE and 5E systems. While I’ll continue creating comics, this new venture is an exciting way to expand the FALLEN universe and explore storytelling in a fresh, interactive way.
Stay tuned for updates—big things are coming!
